Al Wylie, Jr. 95, of Greenwood died Friday, March 27, 2015 at Baptist Medical Center in Oxford. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home and 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Oxford Memorial Cemetery in Oxford, MS. Dr. Rusty Douglass and Rev Steve Fortenberry will officiate at the services in Greenwood and Rev. Ann H. Kelly will officiate at the graveside service in Oxford.
Al was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on April 12, 1919. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, and received a pharmacy degree from the University of Mississippi.
Al was married to the late Mary Elizabeth Holland Wylie on December 21, 1946; they were married 67 years.
Al worked thirty years as a licensed pharmacist and pharmaceuticals representative for Abbott Laboratories until his retirement on April 30, 1981. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as both Deacon and Elder. He enjoyed participating in many civic, social and ministry related activities. He helped organize, open and work at the Community Food Pantry in Greenwood, and he is most noted for his dedication to a jail ministry he established at the city and county jails and the juvenile detention center in Greenwood.
Al is survived by his son Al Wylie, III and wife Val of Brandon, two daughters Babs Wylie of Greenwood and Margaret Riales and husband Lynn Riales of Greenwood. He is also survived by two grandchildren Hart Wylie, and Megan Wylie of Brandon, MS and his great-grandchild Madeleine Wylie of Brandon, MS.
Al was greatly loved by his wife, children, friends, church, and all who knew him. Sharing the love of Jesus Christ was engraved in his heart and daily life.
Pallbearers will be Glenn Beckham, Bill Crump, Larry Crawford, Johnny Jennings, Dr. Todd Fincher, Floyd Melton III, Moss Melton, Joseph Wilkins, Mike Sturdivant, and Bob Morgan. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Powers, Tom Askew, Dudley Pleasants, Timmy Lott, Jimmy Lott, Bill McCain, Jessie White, Clay Holland, David Holland, Charlie Wax, and Johnny Walker.
