Anita Methvin Nokes, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend, passed peacefully at Indywood Glen on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the age of 93.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward "Billy" Nokes, and her son, Lloyd Nokes. She is survived by her children, Alane Nokes, David Nokes (Cindy), and Bob Nokes, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews that she adored like a second mom.

Anita's life was marked by a deep faith, boundless love for her family, and a spirited, no-nonsense approach to life. Born and raised as a sharecropper, she learned the values of hard work and perseverance early on, even out-picking her siblings at a very young age while working in the cotton fields. As an adult, she became a well-respected cafeteria manager at Davis Elementary, where her kindness and dedication to the students were evident.   Anita also had a passion for teaching and served as a Sunday School teacher for 3-year-olds at First Baptist Church, where she touched the lives of many young children with her patience, care, and infectious enthusiasm.   She was a lover of music, and her family fondly recalls her sweet renditions of songs like "I Love You a Bushel and a Peck" and "Don't Tell Me What to Do, I Will Always Love You!" Her sense of humor and fiery spirit were never far behind, and she was known to throw a fork or two when she felt strongly about something—always with a smile on her face, of course.   Anita's cooking was legendary, with her baked macaroni and cheese being a particular favorite among her loved ones. She shared her talents and love through her cooking and her faith, always making sure to offer a kind word, a prayer, or a helping hand when needed.

She had a deep love for adventure, especially during her vacations with her dear siblings, Reginald and Verle, where countless memories were made. Whether she was sharing a laugh, telling a story, or offering advice with a wink and a smile, she was never one to shy away from a good time. Her often-repeated phrase, "You don't have to tell everything you know," spoke to her playful yet private nature, reminding those around her that there was always a little mystery in her charm.   Anita was also a gifted quilter whose work was nothing short of artistry. Her quilts, each meticulously crafted with vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and flawless stitching, were more than just functional—they were expressions of her creativity, patience, and skill. Over the years, she created countless quilts, each one telling its own story and leaving behind a legacy of beauty that will be cherished for generations to come.   Anita's family and friends will remember her for her strong, loving presence, her indomitable spirit, and her unwavering faith.

Heaven has surely gained an angel, and those who knew her will cherish the memory of a woman who knew how to live life with passion, humor, and grace.   She had a pretty good run, and there was never a dull moment with Anita, affectionately known as Nanny by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A service will be held in her honor on Monday December 2nd, at 2 pm at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 12 pm. Interment will follow in Odd Follows East Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Aidan Nokes, Carter Barefoot, Chris Barefoot, Trey Wright, Adam Reynolds, and Ben Jones.
