Charles Curren Johnston passed away Monday morning, July 3, 2017, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital at the age of 87.

He was born at his home in Carroll County, on January 27, 1930, to John Curren and Evelyn Duke Johnston. Shortly after graduating from J.Z. George High School, he began working at Southern Bell (now part of AT&T) initially as a lineman and retired as a construction supervisor for the Greenwood district after thirty-five years of service. On July 21, 1950, he married Betty Jane Nunley, enjoying 60 years with her until she passed away in February of 2011. They were longstanding members of Carrollton United Methodist Church.

He was a charter member of Big Hungry Conservation League where he enjoyed hunting with his children and grandchildren and running his beagles. He enjoyed vegetable gardening as well as baking his famous sugar cookies and always had plenty of each to share with family and friends.

He is survived by his two sons, Terry (Marion) Johnston and Carey (Nina) Johnston, his five grandsons, Drew Johnston (Whitney Nolton), Davis Johnston (Toni Barnett and Hunter), Colby (Tiffany) Johnston, Christopher (Amanda) Johnston, and Daniel (Tracie) Johnston. He is also survived by his five great grandchildren, Jane Marie, Curren, Eliza, Benjamin, and Harper Johnston, and by his brother, Hal Johnston, and sister, Bettie Lynn Bryant.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 6, 2017, at 12:30 at Carrollton United Methodist Church with the funeral to directly follow at 2:00, also at the church. The burial will be at Moore's Memorial Cemetery near Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, following the funeral. Wilson & Knight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

His grandsons will serve as his pall bearers along with his good friend, Jerry Shaw.

We wish to thank all the nurses and doctors at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Crystal Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, and the gracious staff at Country Meadow Personal Care Home who all cared for him throughout the last months of his life.
