Charlie Frank Joiner, a native of Leflore County and a long-time resident of Moorhead, died October 7, 2016, at St. Catherine's Village in Madison where he had lived for the past four years. Charlie, 78, the only child of the late Kathleen Meeks and Charlie Frank Joiner was born June 17, 1938, in Greenwood.
Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, at Moorhead Methodist Church where Charlie had been a member for many years. A graveside service at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Greenwood will follow at 2:00 p.m. The Reverend Veronica Pritchard, pastor of Moorhead Methodist Church will officiate. Wilson and Knight Funeral home in Greenwood is in charge of arrangements.
Charlie was a graduate of Minter City High School and a 1959 graduate of Delta State University, where he was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. He also studied at Duke University where he received a Master's in History. Following graduation from Duke University he began teaching in the History Department at Mississippi Delta Community College in Moorhead where he completed his teaching career there in 1999. During that time he also continued his studies at Mississippi State University.
Charlie enjoyed playing bridge, obtaining the rank of Grand Life Master. He made many friends as he played bridge throughout the south.
Cousins from the Meeks and Joiner families found him to be a delight, a loyal family member, and a wealth of knowledge on their family history. The last few years Charlie was cared for by his cousins Bill Pope and wife Eleana of Jackson, and Martha Pope Stillman of Millington, Tennessee.
