Curtis Doty "Sonny" Bowie joined his beloved wife, Rose Marie, appropriately on what would have been their 64th wedding anniversary, September 11, 2024.  Sonny was born to Emmett Curtis Bowie and Mavis Doty Bowie of Schlater.  Graduating from Greenwood High School in 1956, he continued his education at Mississippi State University and remained a true Bulldog until his death.  While at MSU, Sonny was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.  He continued his finance education by graduating from The School of Banking of the South at LSU in 1975.Sonny began his professional career in banking first on the Coast with Hancock Bank before moving back home to work with several local banks including Leflore Bank and Bank of Commerce before retiring from Sunburst Bank to start his second career in real estate.  Sonny and his daughter, Tish, became business partners in 2000 and opened Bowie Realty.  Sonny retired from a very successful second career.

Throughout Sonny's career he gave back to his community by serving in numerous clubs and organizations in the Delta.  He was a founding member of the Boys Club of Greenwood and Twin Rivers.  He was a past President of the Civitan Club, the Exchange Club and the Greenwood Board of Realtors.  He was named Greenwood Realtor of the Year several times during his career.  Sonny was also a long standing board member for the Salvation Army and the Greenwood Leflore Airport.

Sonny had many outside interests.  He was an avid pilot and hunter, especially pheasants in the Sandhills of Nebraska.  Sonny organized hunting trips to Nebraska for more than 10 years and shared his love for that area with so many other local hunters.  Those memories and adventurous stories were some of his favorites.  Other interest including dancing with Ree at the Young at Heart Club, traveling with the Mississippi Travelers, an RV traveling group, and making memories with the Rolling Bulldogs.  Sonny was known by the kids in Greenwood as the water ski instructor and skeet shooting expert.  He was always teaching kids to ski at Grenada Lake or to shoot at the skeet range near the airport.  His biggest love outside his work was Mississippi State sports.  He and Ree would pack up the RV and follow the Bulldogs all over the South but there was always a question as to who loved the Bulldogs more, Sonny or Ree.  Sonny also found time in the height of his careers to coach pony league and little league baseball, but his greatest coaching job was coaching his granddaughter's softball team for many years.

Sonny was a communicant of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity where he served as an usher.  A celebration of life service will be held at the church Tuesday, September 17th at 11:00 am with Father Don Chancellor officiating.  There will be a brief visitation prior to the service at 10:00 am.  Family and friends will gather at his daughter's home on Monday evening, September 16th from 5:00-8:00 pm.

Sonny is preceded in death by his parents, as well as his two sisters and their husbands, James Oliver and Billye Turner and Fred and Betty Belk of Greenwood.  Survivors include his son, James Markham "Mark" Bowie of Brandon and Greenwood, daughter, Tish Bowie Goodman of Greenwood and his granddaughter, Abbey Goodman Hanks and her husband, Brandon, of Cleveland, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Sonny's private caregivers, Tanga Bozeman, Helen Ivory, and Shirley Ivory as well as the wonderful ladies of Indywood Glen in Greenwood, and Vital Caring Hospice Care.

The family requests memorials be made to the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, The Boys and Girls Club of Greenwood or the charity of the donor's choice.
