Miss Devada Wetmore, 73, was called home by her Savior on Thursday evening, Feb 13, 2014, at her home in Greenwood.
She was a native of South Carolina and her family moved here in 1950. She graduated from Millsaps College, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, and the Features Editor for Bobashela, the Millsaps College Yearbook, and Major Notes, the campus alumni news magazine. Returning to Greenwood, she pursued her love of language by becoming a teacher of English and Latin. Her life-long love of teaching and language found an outlet in helping tutor students well into her retirement.
She was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and faithful volunteer for many ministries. She loved her friends and her church family. She was well loved in return.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Lee Wetmore of Connecticut, her step-sister Anne Garrett Smith of North Carolina, her step-brother Charles "Grady" Garrett of New York City, and her parents, Mr. Lemuel Lee "Lem" Wetmore and Mrs. Dorothy Craig Lucas Wetmore.
She is survived by two brothers, Dale Wetmore and James E. "Jimmy" Wetmore of Madison, Florida. And she leaves behind her great niece, Dana Scarpa from Salisbury, Connecticut. She also leaves behind a dearly loved cat, Lady Primrose, who is a local celebrity, winner of Most Adorable Cat in the Commonwealth contest.
Graveside services are at 9:30 am Monday, February 17th at Odd Fellows Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 10:00 am at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Randy Thompson and Rev. Richard Owens presiding. Wilson & Knight are in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Humane Society or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
