Obituary

Funeral services for Dr. Dewey Wayne Howard, formerly of Winona, MS, will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, November 20, 2022 graveside in Oakwood Cemetery in Winona.  Mr. Howard died on Tuesday, at Providence Living Center in Grenada, MS.  He was 80 years old.

Wayne was born on September 7, 1942 in Grenada, MS, to Charles Vernon Howard and Viola Corinne Blaylock Howard.  He showed early promise in his schoolwork and musical abilities, graduating first in his class from Winona High School, winning multiple awards and honors, and beginning a lifelong love of education and music.

Dr. Howard was a double major in Music and Arts at Belhaven College, graduating cum laude , earning the Trustee's Award for highest GPA in his class amongst other undergraduate honors and awards.  He received his Master's and Doctorate degrees in Musicology from Indiana University at Bloomington, and traveled to India under a Fulbright Hays scholarship while at IU.  While in India, Wayne developed a keen interest in the music and culture, which led to his work as an author, lecturer, linguist, and scholar upon the subject.  His hobbies included cooking, astronomy, and piano.

He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal grandparents, Monroe and Pearl Chambley Blaylock, and fraternal grandparents, Sam and Rella C. Howard.

He is survived by his cousins, Mrs. James Howard, Donna Howard Serio, Debbie Howard Bond, Jim Howard and Ronnie Howard.
