Doris Marie Nicholson Counts, 85, of Oklahoma City, OK, formally of Greenwood, MS, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 19, 2026.
Mrs. Counts was born on November 26, 1940, in Philadelphia, MS, to Marvin and DeLois Nicholson. Doris was a graduate of Greenwood High School. After high school, she attended numerous training sessions in Principles of Banking. She then went to work for the Bank of Commerce where she retired in 2006.
She was a member of First Baptist Church where she also attended the Martha Sunday School class and was a member of the choir. Doris also served on numerous committees including the committee for the 126th Homecoming of the church.
Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Wayne Counts Sr.; her parents; brothers, Harold Nicholson and Paul Nicholson; and sisters, Mary Nicholson Ingram (husband Pat Ingram of Cleveland) and Shirley Nicholson Carpenter (husband James Carpenter of Jackson); sister-in-law, Judy Nicholson of Greenwood.
She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Counts Smith and her husband Rob of Brookhaven; a son, John Wayne Counts Jr. and his wife Vickie of Oklahoma City, OK. As well as 5 grandchildren, Alexandra and husband Mason Myers of Oklahoma City, John-Crawford and Abbey Counts of Oklahoma City, OK, Maddie Ogden, Nick and Maggie Ogden and Sophie Smith of Brookhaven. Doris also had 4 great grandchildren, Murphy Mae and Millie Kate Myers of Oklahoma City, OK, John-Lawrence Counts of Oklahoma City, OK, and Evie Mae of Brookhaven. She is also survived by her brother, Marvin Nicholson Jr. of Greenwood, and sister-in-law, Helen Nicholson of Hattiesburg, as well as many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 22, 2026, 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood. A private family graveside will be held immediately following in the Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton.
