Gladys Mae Darby Lamb, 90, of Greenwood, MS passed from this life on Saturday April 4, 2015 at Crystal Health and Rehabilitation in Greenwood.
Mrs. Lamb was born July 22, 1924 in Tallahatchie County. She graduated from Webb High School in 1942 and married Les Lamb in January 1944. She and Les opened Lamb's Studio and Camera shop in 1947.
As a charter member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Mrs. Lamb served as Sunday School Superintendant, as a Sunday School teacher, as President of the United Methodist Women and more recently as Historian. She was also instrumental in the creation of the carpet Murals that are displayed in the Fellowship Hall.
In 1964, Mrs. Lamb graduated from the first Licensed Practical Nurses School which was located in Greenwood and sponsored by Greenwood Leflore Hospital and the Greenwood Public Schools. She worked at Greenwood Leflore Hospital before going to work for Dr. Jones Lamb and Dr. Guy Sharp. She also worked for Dr. E.M. Meek and Dr. S.R. Evans. As a medical assistant, she saw a need for education in that field, and helped start a local chapter of Society of Medical Assistants. She served as President of the local chapter as well as President of the Mississippi State Society of Medical Assistants. She also served on other State and National committees for that organization.
For many years, Mrs. Lamb has been known for her Birthday and Wedding cakes. Her cake decorating skills helped her in the creation of her Sugar Easter Eggs which she has made for many local families for many years. Recently her Egg creations have been featured in the Leflore Illustrated Magazine, The Delta Magazine, Eat, Drink Mississippi and the Oxford Magazine and Invitation Oxford Magazine.
Mrs. Lamb is survived by her three sons, Dr. Timothy H. Lamb (Carolyn) Hank Lamb (preceded in death recently by her beloved daughter-in-law, Rebecca) Chuck Lamb (Rosemary). Nine grandchildren, Vicki Whitehead, Susan Lamb, Emily Sipes, Andrew Lamb, John Lamb, Watson Lamb, Darby Lamb, Leah Lamb and Adrian Rose Dill. She had twenty-one great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lester H. Lamb, her parents Walter Graham Darby and Gladys Jones Darby, her sister, Betty Jo Ivy and brother James Waldan Darby.
Visitation will be Tuesday April 7 at St. John's United Methodist Church from 5 – 7pm. The service will be at 11:00 am Wednesday April 8 at St. John's UMC. A graveside service will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery immediately after the service
Pall bearers will be Terry Whitehead, Lance Sipes, Andrew Lamb, John Lamb, Watson Lamb, and Darby Lamb.
Special thanks to her recent caretakers – Leona Thomas, Diana Thomas, Diane Smith, Pat Hood, Angela Richardson and the nurses and staff at Crystal Health and Rehabilitation, as well as, the Emergency Department doctors and staff and the nurses who cared for her on the 4th and 5th floors at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
