Helen Elizabeth Horton Wiggins , 95, of Greenwood, MS, died Monday, March 20, 2017 at Crystal Health & Rehab. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church and visitation will be from 1p.m. till service time at the church. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Dr. Rusty Douglas and Rev. Steve Fortenberry will officiate. Wilson & Knight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born in Grenada,MS, on January 1, 1922 to the late Littleberry Pritchard Horton and Gertrude Gillon Horton. She and her three siblings grew up in Grenada. Helen loved her family, her church, her many friends and music. She finished high school in 1939 and attended Belhaven College in Jackson where she received her Bachelors of Music degree in 1943. She was secretary of the freshman class, a staff member of the campus newspaper and was business manager of "White Columns", the college yearbook. She was a member of the Acapella Choir and the vocal Octette. During her senior year she was selected to represent Belhaven College in voice at the annual convention of the Mississippi Federation of Music Clubs. She was also chosen May Queen, the highest social honor accorded a student. After graduation from college, she continued her vocal studies under the direction of Mrs. Clara Elby at the Memphis College of Music.

On May 1, 1947 Helen married Edward Elson Wiggins and they made their home in Greenwood, where Elson was in the cotton business. Helen enjoyed her years of involvement in Greenwood arts and civic affairs. She was past president of the Matinee Musicale in 1952-1953, a member of the Cotton Wives Auxiliary, and a member of the Chakchiuma Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as Historian and National Defense Chairman. One of the hardest but one of her most pleasurable undertakings was the coordination of her fiftieth class reunion in 1989. Helen was a lifelong Presbyterian and treasured her years in the chancel choir.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her brothers, Will Horton, and Pritchard Horton, and her sister, Susie Lee Chamberlain. She is survived by her daughter, Helon Wiggins of Greenwood, MS, several nieces and nephews, and her three precious dogs, Muffin, Bubba, and Bee Bee.

Pallbearers will be John Muse, Scott Upchurch, Benjamin Rosenthal, Doug Muse, Jimmy Sandling, and Charles Wright.

Memorials may be made to Chamberlin Hunt or to the College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University.
