Herman Lee (Hank) Hodges, 91, died of congestive heart failure at his home on Friday, April 03, 2015.
Hank was born Aug. 24, 1923 in Coila, MS. He lived in Carrollton and Greenwood and graduated from Greenwood High School. He was the son of Herman Lee Hodges, Sr. and Bessie Cable Hodges. While still in high school he started his career in the cotton industry as office boy at Staple Cotton and held every office in Staplcotn and Stapldiscount and retired as President and C.E.O. of both organizations in 1986. He served as Chairman of Amcot, Inc. and Amcot, International of Osaka, Japan. He served as President of Cotton Council International, director of National Cotton Council, vice president of Delta Council and president of Mississippi Council of Farmer Cooperatives. He served as president of Greenwood Junior Chamber of Commerce and National Director of U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in the organization of Region VI Mental Health (LifeHelp) and served as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for 28 years. He was the President and founder of Beacon Harbor, a home for developmentaly disabled adults. He was District Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America and a director of Leflore County United Givers. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying for business and pleasure. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
He received the Lions Club award as Outstanding Citizen of Leflore County in 2003 and the Greenwood Commonwealth Outstanding Citizen Award in 2005. He was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Nativity and had served on the Vestry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William Richard Hodges, his sister, Sue Hodges Townsend, his sons, Rev. William Lee Hodges and Robert Wilson Hodges.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jean Downing Hodges, his granddaughter, Carrie Downing Hodges Long and her husband Rhyine, his grandson Matthew Hodges and his wife, Melanie and a great-granddaughter, Ann Frances Downing Long.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 7 at 3:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity with visitation at 1:30 at the church. The Rev. Lynn Ronaldi will officiate. Memorials may be made to Beacon Harbor, Box 701, Greenwood, MS or a charity of your choice. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton. Wilson and Knight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Howard Alderman, Danny Walker, Gary Tingle, John Pittman, Larry Gnemi, Robert Powers, Walker Sturdivant, Mack Alford, and Eddie Amelung. Honorary pallbearers will be William Fitts, Woods Eastland, and Meredith Allen.
The family is grateful for the loving care of Janie Jones, Jay Matthews with Grace Hospice, Marlon Parker, Matthew Blackmon, Keith McGee, and Jerry Branch.
