Howard Raymond Davis

Services for Howard Raymond Davis of Greenwood will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood. Mr. Davis, 91, died Monday, December 28, 2015, at his home in Greenwood.

Mr. Davis was born in Greenville, Mississippi September 26, 1924 to Sidney F. and Blanche K. Davis. The Davis family lived in Jackson and Yazoo City before moving to Greenwood in 1932.

He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1942 and entered Mississippi State University, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. During his freshman year he volunteered for the U.S. Army and served in the 665th Field Artillery Battalion in Europe during World War II. After the war ended he returned to Mississippi State and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1949. He returned to Greenwood and entered the automobile business. In 1964 he was one of the founders and served as president of Cade-Davis-Tubbs Ford, Inc., Greenwood's local Ford dealership.

He was a past member and served on the Board of Directors of the Greenwood Leflore Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board. He was one of the original organizers of the Greenwood Community Band where he served as president and treasurer. He was a member of the Greenwood Kiwanis Club for over 50 years. He served on the Executive Committee that raised funds for the Veterans Memorial and the renovation of the American Legion Building. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood where he served many years as Deacon, Elder and Church Trustee. He was a member of the Men's Bible Class.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Martha Nell Pinkston Davis, a son Howard R. Davis, Jr. of Greenwood, a daughter Martha Nan Thames of Laurel and her husband Kermit Thames, grandaughters Amy Thames of Laurel and Dr. Anna Biggers and her husband Dr. Marc Biggers of Collierville, Tennessee, and two great-grandchildren, Allie Biggers and Marc Allen Biggers.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Dr. Rusty Douglas and the Rev. Steve Fortenberry will officiate the services.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery.
