Services for James H. "Bill" Stallings Jr., of Greenwood will be held Tuesday, September 15, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood with visitation at 10 a.m. and the service at 11 am. Mr. Stallings, 85, passed away, and joyfully went to be with the Lord, Sunday, September 13, 2015, at the Mississippi State Veteran's Home in Kosciusko, MS following a lengthy illness. He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Louise Virginia Stallings, two sisters, Jeanette S. Bethany of Baker, LA, and Jean S. Fulton of Baton Rouge, LA. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ginger and Billy Gregg of Greenwood, two sons and daughters-in-law, James H. "Jim" and Sherry Stallings, III of Greenwood, John David and Beth Stallings of Dyersburg, TN, five grandchildren, Brad Stallings, Nicole Gregg Upchurch and Matthew Gregg of Greenwood, John David Stallings and William Patrick Stallings, both of Dyersburg, one great granddaughter, Skyler Upchurch, also of Greenwood and one brother-in-law, Thomas Bethany of Baker, LA. Mr. Stallings was born in Macon, MS., October 11, 1929, to the late James H. Stallings and Eunice Parnell Stallings. He served honorably in the 622nd Engineer Aviation Maintenance Company during the Korean War. He was a retired automotive parts salesman for Hawkins Auto Parts in Calhoun City. He loved to call on clients, share humorous stories and make friends. During the years his sons were members of Boy Scout Troop 200, he loved to go with them on their camping trips and assist in the many activities they took part in. His hobbies included camping, tying fishing flies, carving duck figures into pieces of wood, making walking sticks out of old vines and collecting people. At one time, he was known as the Mayor of Corrine Drive and had a pet squirrel named Mollie that came when he called and ate pecans out of his hand. He loved to entertain folks and make them feel special. Following retirement Bill and Virginia spent 12 years as camp hosts at Fairy Stone State Park in Virginia. They made many friends, tended to the needs of visitors, shared songs and laughter, and according to many of their camping friends, brought people together as a family. They retired from camp hosting in 2010 following a retirement party where they were honored by the State of Virginia. Most any of the camping friends they made can recall Bill's favorite song, "Managua Nicaragua". There are many in Greenwood that can remember him reciting the song to them as well. He also wrote a memorable poem about his beloved little dog titled, "My Laura Belle." In March of this year, "Bill", as he was affectionately known to many, moved into the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Kosciusko, where he quickly became a favorite of the staff. On one returning trip from a stay in Baptist Hospital in Jackson, they lined up at the door and clapped as he was rolled in. Dr. Rusty Douglas and Rev. Steve Fortenberry will officiate at the services. Pallbearers will be Matthew Gregg, William Patrick Stallings, Paul Thomas, Lee Houston, Peter Houston and Earl Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be Brad Stallings, and John David Stallings. Mr. Stallings, Daddy to some of us, Papaw to others of us, and beloved friend to many, will be missed more than he could ever have imagined.
