Jere Gibert Stansel passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on December 16, 2023 at her home after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and teacher.  Jere was kind, loving, patient, and gentle to the end, and an incredible example of a Godly, Southern lady.

Jere was born on January 23, 1945 in Memphis, Tennessee to Jere Tucker Gibert and Zora Coghlan Gibert of Perthshire. She attended grammar school in Gunnison and graduated from Rosedale High School. Jere attended Ole Miss for two years where she was a cheerleader, a Chi Omega, and voted Best Dressed; but after marrying her sophomore year, she graduated from Delta State University in 1967.

Jere married Gene Stansel on July 24, 1965. They lived in Ruleville, Mississippi for over 20 years while Gene farmed and they raised a family. In 1985, Jere, Gene, and their three girls moved to Greenwood. Jere taught English at Pillow Academy and served as the Chair of the English Department before retiring in 2005. Throughout her 20 years of teaching, and tutoring after her retirement, her students knew how much she loved them even as she pushed them to be the best versions of themselves.

Jere was a dedicated member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. She served on the board of the Museum of the Mississippi Delta and was a life member of the Greenwood Garden Club.

Jere is survived by her husband of 58 years, Gene, their three daughters (Julie Skinner of Philadelphia, PA, Martha Boyd of Oxford, MS, and Catharine Matthews of St. Louis, MO), and eight grandchildren (Elizabeth Tanous, William Boyd, John David Skinner, Joshua Skinner, August Boyd, Betsy Boyd, Richard Boyd, and Dottie Matthews). She is also survived by her sister Julia Moore of Cleveland, MS, and her niece Kilby Brabston of Jackson, MS.

Services will be held on Monday, December 18, 2023. A private burial for family will be held that morning at Lehrton Cemetery in Ruleville followed by a celebration of life at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenwood at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Westminster before the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pillow Academy or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
