Obituary

Joan Ferguson Stowers, 85, died peacefully at home, after a short battle with Alzheimer's/Dementia and heart problems on Monday, December 4, 2023. Joan was born in Shaw, MS, to Ariles Neede and Donna Tounzen Ferguson, who both preceded her in death. She was the oldest of three children. Her brother and sister, Harold Ferguson and Jeanette Ferguson Hamel, also both preceded her in death.

She met and married the love of her life, James Stowers, while in high school in Inverness, MS. They married shortly after graduation in 1956, and together had three children who survive her, Jamie Stowers (Elizabeth), Donna Stowers Pittman (Bruce) and Kay Stowers. They raised their family in Quito and Itta Bena, MS. James preceded Joan in death. Joan is also survived by five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Joan worked in the banking industry for many years before retiring. She then went to work at the Itta Bena Housing Authority. She fully retired to help take care of her sick husband. She was a member of the now defunct Itta Bena Presbyterian Church, which her mother-in-law help start. In her younger days Joan and James were members of a local supper club, where they met a lot of people and remained friends with all of them.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 10:00 AM in Itta Bena Cemetery. Bro Bobby Boyd will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Lee Stowers, Will Stowers, Shae Ferguson, Ryan Lloyd, Kendol Collins, and Michael Shaifer. Honorary pallbearer will be Xander Stowers.
