John Kenney Miller, Jr. passed away on November 12, 2017. Kenney was born to John Kenney Miller, Sr. and Clara Hill Miller on December 14, 1932 in Savannah, Georgia. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1949. Kenney was a sixteen-year-old for the first semester of his freshman year at Georgia Tech, where he was on the swim team. His roommate was Jim Tate Kirkland from Greenwood. His sophomore year, he attended Ole Miss, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. At age eighteen, Kenney enlisted in the Naval Air Cadet (NAVCAD) program. He trained in Pensacola, Florida and as a nineteen-year-old he became the youngest jet pilot in the Navy. Kenney served as a pilot aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown, flying F9F-6 Cougars in the Pacific theater. Thereafter, he was a flight instructor at Whiting Field, Florida. After this tour in the Navy, Kenney attended Mississippi State University where he earned a B. S. degree in aeronautical engineering in 1960. While a student at State, Kenney flew crop dusters for Vic Sutter Flying Service near Sidon, MS. He then returned to the Navy and was an advanced jet flight instructor at NAS Kingsville, TX and served on the U.S.S Enterprise.

After leaving the Navy, Kenney flew for Air America in Cambodia, Laos, and South Vietnam for a number of years. Subsequently, he owned and operated J. K. Miller Sports Marine in Greenwood. After that, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. During his time in Greenwood, Kenney loved duck hunting, discussing politics and having lunch at the Crystal Grill.

Kenney was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister, Sandra Miller McDaniel, and his brother, Robert Arrington Miller (Georgia), of Jackson, MS, and eight nieces and nephews. It was Kenney's wish that his body be donated for medical science. A private family memorial service will be held.
