Laura Elizabeth Truitt Williamson, 97, beloved aunt and great aunt, passed away Thursday Feb. 13, 2014 at Indywood Glen in Greenwood, MS. Funeral services are 2 P.M. Saturday Feb. 15 at Wilson & Knight funeral home with interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Rev. Brad Hodges and Rev Glen Seefeld will officiate. Visitation is from 12:30 till 2 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Williamson was a lifelong resident of Greenwood. She was born to Lighia Gil and Maggie McNeer Truitt from Philipp. She graduated from Sunflower Agricultural High School and Sunflower Jr. College. She received a Bachelor's Degree from Blue Mountain College and a Master's Degree from the University of Mississippi. A devoted teacher, she taught in Carrollton, Sidon and Greenwood schools. She was Principal of Davis Elementary and later was Director of Instruction for grades 1-12 in the Leflore County School District. She was also a beloved elementary principal at Pillow Academy for seven years until her retirement in 1981. Mrs. Williamson will be remembered for her integrity and kindness to all. She loved playing bridge with her friends and eating lunch or dinner regularly at The Crystal Grill. Mrs. Williamson remained very active until the last few years of her life, but she still had a warm, gentle smile that could light up the room. Mrs. Williamson was also a faithful member of the First United Methodist church.
Mrs. Williamson was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, U. C, Williamson, whom she was married from 1978 to 1988.
She is survived by her step daughter, Carla (Billy) Proctor of Memphis, TN, her nieces, Betty Truitt Taylor (Billy) of Laurel, Linda Truitt of Greenwood, and her nephews, Hal Truitt (Robbin) of Memphis, TN and Jack Truitt of Birmingham, Al and several great nieces and nephews. Although Mrs. Williamson never had children of her own, she was always viewed as a mother and grandmother-figure in the Truitt family.
Pallbearers are Truitt Taylor, Rick Truitt, Jeff Truitt, Colin Truitt and Norris Truitt.
The family wishes to offer a special thanks to the staff of Indywood Glen, Grace Community Hospice, and her care givers, Alice Sanders, Ruth Meek and Glen Elam.
Memorials may be made to 1 st United Methodist Church, Greenwood, MS or Pillow Academy.
