Services for Lucy Paxton Aldridge Carter of Greenwood will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood.
Mrs. Carter, 99, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, at Indywood Glen.
She was born July 4, 1917, in Arcola, Mississippi. She was the third child of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Paxton Aldridge. Lucy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and community member. She took great pleasure in caring for and spending time with her sons and their families.
Mrs. Carter studied bookkeeping at Delta State College, now Delta State University. She met her husband, Michael Hammond Carter, when he rented a room in her family's home in Cleveland, Mississippi, where he was employed. They married on January 15, 1942, and shortly moved to Oxford, where he was employed as an aviation instructor.
While Mr. Carter was serving in the U. S. Army Air Corps, Lucy set up a home for her family in the different locations where he was stationed, including Nashville, Tennessee, Memphis and Homestead, Florida.
After World War II ended, Mike and Lucy and their three sons lived in Newellton, Louisiana, for two years, but settled in Itta Bena and Greenwood, where Mike went to work for the Farmer's Supply Co-op. Lucy always kept a welcoming home for her family and enjoyed her Wednesday morning bridge club, and the Greenwood Garden Club. She enjoyed cooking and hosting luncheons in her home.
She was a faithful member of Greenwood's First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Susan Aldridge Porter, her brother, Jack Aldridge, and Michael Hammond Carter, Sr. (Mike), her husband of 61 years.
She is survived by her sons, Dr. Michael Hammond Carter Jr. and wife Mary Rose of Greenwood, Kirk Paxton Carter and wife Paula of Memphis, and Alan Walker Carter and wife Lela of Jackson; her grandchildren, Claire Carter of Austin, Texas, Bill Carter and wife Neely of Forrest City, Arkansas, Walker Carter and wife Janet of Washington, D.C., Anne Byrn Carter Floyd and husband Mark of Nashville, Paxton Carter of Memphis, Katherine Carter Torkelsen and husband Leif of Nashville, Meagan Cascio and husband Chris of Greenwood, and Whitney Skelton of Greenwood; and great-grandchildren Wade Noelke, Anna Noelke, Jack Carter, Mavis Blue Sartin, Shelby Rose Carter, Henry Noelke, Carter Floyd, Rivers Cascio, Madison Carter and Annie Torkelsen.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, followed at 11 a.m. by the funeral service in the sanctuary. The Rev. Dr. Rusty Douglas will officiate. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mrs. Carter's grandsons and great-grandsons.
Wilson and Knight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
