Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 am - 11:00 am prior to the service. Mrs. Shipley passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, surrounded by friends, after teaching an aerobics class.
Mrs. Shipley, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel L. Brister, Jr., was born March 7, 1933 in Greenwood, MS where she lived most of her life. Although it was difficult on all wartime families, she was very proud that her father served as a flight surgeon during World War II at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Georgia for four years. They returned to Greenwood and she attended Greenwood High School where she enjoyed many activities, especially being a cheerleader. Mrs. Shipley graduated in 1951. She attended summer school the following summer at the University of Miami, then attended the University of Alabama.
Mrs. Shipley married Lester Adam Shipley, Jr. in June 1953. They made their home in Greenwood. Mrs. Shipley was a well-known flight instructor for many years. She also taught aerobics for 22 years and loved individualizing her routines and music for each class. Mrs. Shipley was an avid student of the Bible, leading the Community Bible Study and teaching Sunday school. She absolutely loved all of her students.
Mrs. Shipley was known to rescue and help stray dogs and cats throughout the Delta. Much of her time and energy was dedicated to lending a helping hand, and she will be remembered for her many animal rescues. She also enjoyed art and cooking.
Mrs. Shipley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester Adam Shipley, Jr.; her son, Lester Adam Shipley III; and her son, Samuel Martin Shipley.
She is survived by a daughter, Brister Shipley Lee (Dr. David) of Greenville, MS; a brother-in-law, Y. Fraiser Shipley; granddaughters, Dr. Adele Lee Venable (Dr. Casey) and Dr. Ellen-Brister Mitchell (Kyle); a grandson, Sam D. Shipley; and 2 great grandsons.
Charitable contributions may be mailed to the Leflore County Humane Society, 1810 Cypress Avenue, Greenwood, MS 38930 or to the charity of your choice.
