Obituary

Marilyn Gelman, 61, of Greenwood, MS, died Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at Indywood Glen. Services were held at 3:00 PM Thursday, September 19, 2024 graveside in Ahavath Rayim Cemetery.

Marilyn was born on June 9, 1963 to Meyer and Mabel Gelman. She graduated from Greenwood High School and had a bachelor's degree from Delta State University.  She had further training as a Medical Technician at North Mississippi Medical Center. She worked in the laboratory at Greenwood Leflore Hospital mainly in the blood bank for over 37 years. She retired in April 2024 due to her declining health.

She is survived by her sister, Norma Sarvis (Martin), from Jerusalem, Israel, and her brother, Stephen Gelman (Barbara) of Ellijay, GA, a nephew, Lee Amicke (Amy), and many friends and work associates.  She was an active member of Congregation Ahavath Rayim and often helped lead Sabbath and High Holiday Services. She was well versed in the Jewish liturgy.

Marilyn loved to sing, loved musicals and generally knew every word of dialogue and songs. She was active in the community band for many years and played the flute. She was the hit of a hospital talent show with her rendition of Madonna's "Material Girl" and her co- workers saw a rare side of her personality.  She had a great memory and knew almost everything about every U.S. presidents.  She never missed Jeopardy, and she generally knew the answers before the contestants.

As her health failed, she kept a positive attitude.  She will be missed by family and friends.  We are thankful to the staff at Indywood Glen where she lived since May, to her doctors, Mike and Gail Goldberg, and to the staff at Accentcare who helped her through hospice care.

In her memory memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, the Institute of Southern Jewish Life in Jackson MS, or to your favorite charity.
