Martha Magruder
Dulin
May 4, 1932 — Jan 19, 2022
Madison
Martha Magruder Dulin, 89, of Madison (former longtime resident of Itta Bena), passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, due to complications stemming from a long illness. Martha was born on May 4, 1932, to Freeland Harris and Adele (Critz) Magruder in Memphis, Tennessee. She was a proud native of Itta Bena and spent most of her childhood and adult years on the banks of Roebuck Lake. She always said Itta Bena was the perfect place to grow up and reminisced often about her youth in the Delta and her many childhood friends.
Martha attended Leflore County High School through the 10 th grade and completed her high school years at Gulf Park College in Gulfport, Mississippi. She went on to attend college at Northwestern College (now known as Rhodes College) in Memphis, Tennessee where she became a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She also briefly attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi.
At one of the many dances she loved to attend in the Delta, a childhood friend introduced her to George Dulin, a young southern gentleman from Greenwood, who would later become her lifetime dance partner. George and Martha were married in March of 1963, and after living briefly in Gulfport, they settled down back in her beloved Itta Bena, where George practiced law in Greenwood and Martha dedicated her life to making a happy home and raising their family. She had an enduring love for all living things, especially plants and any and all "critters" that needed help; flowers and animals just made her happy. Her family was her greatest joy, and she instilled her strong faith, her high ideals, and her love of her beautiful hometown in both of her girls.
In 2008, Martha moved with George to Madison to be closer to their 2 daughters and their grandchildren. She became a member of Saint Matthew's United Methodist Church in Madison, where she was embraced and made many new friends. Martha was strong in her Christian faith and looked forward with joy to meeting her Savior and being reunited with George and many other family and friends who had gone before her. Her family rejoices in the knowledge that she is now fully healed and is able to see and walk and dance once again in her eternal home.
Martha is survived by her daughters, Adele (Steve) Johnson and Marti Dulin; grandchildren Courtney Johnson (fiance' Bryson Marretta) and Garrett Johnson and numerous nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by George, her beloved husband of 54 years, her parents, and her brother, Freeland Harris Magruder, Jr.
The family will greet friends from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood, Mississippi, with graveside services and burial following at the Itta Bena Cemetery on Sunday, January 23, 2022.
