Martha Brown Vaughn Jordan died peacefully at her home on November 5, 2022 after a short battle with cancer.  The daughter of J. Rigg Vaughn and Chebie Harris, Martha was born in Steens, Mississippi on January 13, 1933, moved to Columbus for her high school years and graduated from Lee High School.  She attended Wheaton College and graduated from Mississippi State College for Women with a degree in Education in 1955.  Upon graduation, she left the Hills for her first job as a first-grade teacher in Greenwood, taught a year at Tindall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida before returning to the Delta as a first-grade teacher at The Little Red School House.  Greenwood quickly became her home as she soon met and was married for 52 years to the love of her life, Granville Jordan, who preceded her in death in 2010.

A lifelong educator, she also taught kindergarten at First Presbyterian Church and North Greenwood Baptist Church and many of her former students continued to visit her throughout her long life.  She has been an active member of First Presbyterian Church all her adult life serving as Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian of Presbyterian Women.  She was a member of the Junior Auxiliary, LeBonte Club, and the Town and Country Garden Club.  She loved to travel – first with her husband in his single engine plane and then around the country and Europe with their many friends.

Known for her sense of fashion and style, Martha was blessed and beloved by many friends, young and old – but most by her children and grandchildren.  Always gracious, fun loving, and friendly, she could be a fierce competitor in bridge or other card games and her grandchildren learned early that GrandMartha played to win.  Her garden was her passion and took pleasure and pride in her beautiful yard always sharing with everyone including anyone walking in the neighborhood.

Mrs. Jordan is survived by her son, Walter Granville Jordan III of Greenwood, and two daughters, Shaeffer Jordan Upton of Memphis, and Vaughn Jordan Mackay of Alexandria, Virginia, and 6 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Perry Burkart, Glenn Burkart, Duncan Mackay, Harris Mackay, James Upton, Jackson Schieffler, and Phillip Strickland.  Honorary pallbearers are Eddie Amelung, Skip Burkart, Johnny Favarra, Rigg Ferguson, Tommy Gregory, Tommy Marlow, Terry McKibbon, Floyd Melton Jr., and John Pittman.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 8 from 1:00-2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church parlor followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 pm in the church sanctuary.  Wilson & Knight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the charity of choice.
