Mrs. Mixon was born in Carroll County near Carrollton on October 21, 1927. She retired from South Central Bell as a telephone operator and clerk in 1982 after 32 years of service but continued as an active member of the Telephone Company Pioneer Club. She was a longtime resident of Greenwood and a former member of North Greenwood Baptist Church. After moving to Indianola in 1997, she became a faithful member of First Baptist Church and her beloved Golden Circle Sunday School Class.
She was an unconditionally loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was affectionately known as "Gran" to her family and friends, for whom she loved to share many homemade treats, including chocolate chip cookies, chocolate pies, and cheese straws. Beyond her hospitality, she spent much of her life sewing, painting, gardening, and reading her Bible.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Harold Montgomery and Nora Irene McDaniel Montgomery; sisters, Sarah Montgomery and Ann Crowley; husband, James Redelle Poe, Sr. and husband, Lawrence "Larry" Ellis Mixon. She is survived by her brother, James Ross Montgomery (Betty) of Greenwood; one sister, Faye Blanchard of Brunswick, Georgia; two sons, James "Jimmy" Redelle Poe, Jr. (Debbie) of Indianola and Ronnie Lane Poe (Susan) of Carrollton; five grandchildren, Courtney Rushing (David), Neely Berry (Michael), Shelley Wisenor (Justin), Brandon Poe (Katie), and Austin Poe (Felicia); 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family also wishes to express their gratitude for her caregiver of two years, Betty.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Indianola, Carrollton Baptist Church, or to a favorite charity.
