Sam Joseph Abraham
March 10, 1951 – October 24, 2026
Sam Joseph Abraham entered eternal rest on October 24, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of faith, love, service, and devotion to his family and community. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and dedicated public servant whose kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to others touched countless lives.
Sam was born on March 10, 1951, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to Albert Lee Abraham, Sr., and Ruby Showah Abraham. He graduated from Greenwood High School and Mississippi Delta Junior College while working at Kroger Supermarket. He continued his education at Mississippi State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.
Sam married the love of his life, Flora Randa “Flo” Harrell Abraham, and together they shared 40 years of marriage until her passing in 2016. Their life together was filled with love, laughter, great joy, and challenges, all sustained by their steadfast faith in God.
From 1973 to 1985, Sam served as an auditor with the Mississippi State Department of Audit, ensuring that financial transactions complied with state and federal laws and generally accepted accounting principles. He later served as a consultant for the North Central Planning and Development District, assisting local chancery clerks, boards of supervisors, and other county offices in meeting the legal and financial requirements established by the State Department of Audit.
In 1995, Sam was elected Leflore County Chancery Clerk and shortly thereafter assumed the additional role of county administrator. He retired from that position in 2015 and was subsequently elected to serve as Leflore County District 1 Supervisor, a position he faithfully held until his passing.
Guided by his deep faith and genuine desire to improve the lives of others, Sam devoted much of his life to serving his community. He worked tirelessly to strengthen Leflore County and ensure a better future for its residents. Among his most recent and meaningful accomplishments was his instrumental role in helping facilitate the acquisition of the local hospital by the University of Mississippi Medical Center. His dedication to public service was not simply a career but a calling rooted in his belief that helping others was one of life’s greatest responsibilities. His work in helping develop Locus Benedictus Ministries was his most cherished accomplishment.
Although Sam accomplished much throughout his professional life, his greatest joys were found in his faith, his family, and his service to others. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. His outdoor adventures often resulted in his vehicle becoming stuck in the mud, though he was equally well known for coming to the rescue whenever someone else found themselves in the same predicament. These moments reflected his adventurous spirit, wonderful sense of humor, and willingness to lend a helping hand. Sam had a contagious laugh, a generous heart, and a remarkable gift for turning friends into family. He never met a stranger, and those fortunate enough to know him will forever remember his warmth, kindness, and unforgettable personality.
A lifelong communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Sam remained devoted to his Catholic faith throughout his life. He served on the church’s Finance Committee and Parish Council and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
His commitment to leadership and community involvement extended to numerous professional and civic organizations. He was a member of the Mississippi Association of Supervisors, the Chancery Clerks Association, the County Administrators Association, and the Greenwood-Leflore Chamber of Commerce. He served as Vice Chairman of the Board of the North Central Planning and Development District and was involved with the Greenwood Lions Club, Itta Bena Rotary Club, Mississippi State University Alumni Association, and Civitan Club. He also served as Past President of the Mississippi Delta Community College Alumni Association and was honored as Alumnus of the Year in 1997. In addition, he served on the Board of Mississippi Delta Community College.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Lee Abraham, Sr., and Ruby Showah Abraham; his beloved wife, Flora Randa “Flo” Harrell Abraham; his brother-in-law, Robert Briggs; and his sisters-in-law, Patsy Harrell Britt and Tammy Harrell.
Above all else, Sam considered his family his greatest blessing. He is survived by his two beloved daughters, Randee Abraham Neal and Beth Abraham Nicholson (Justin), and his six cherished grandchildren, Brennan Clare Neal, Sam Carl Neal, Landry Kate Neal, Mary Leesam Nicholson, Caroline Randall Nicholson, and Ann Sutton Nicholson.
He is also survived by his brother, A. Lee Abraham, Jr.; his sisters, Sandra Abraham Briggs and Mary Magdalene Abraham; his cousin & life long brother at heart, George Joseph; his brother-in-law, Danny Harrell; his sister-in-law, Sheila Harrell Mitchell; his nephew, Robert Briggs (Lori); his great-nephews, Steven and Sawyer Briggs; and his great-niece, Shelby Briggs.
Sam Joseph Abraham lived a life defined by faith, strengthened by family, and dedicated to the service of others. His legacy will live on through the family he loved so dearly, the friendships he treasured, and the community he worked so faithfully to serve.
Though he will be deeply missed, his love, laughter, generosity, and unwavering faith will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew him.
