Services for Sara Parker Kenwright will be held graveside on Saturday, December 17, 2022 11:00 AM at Shiloh Cemetery in Big Creek, MS, in Calhoun County.
Mrs. Kenwright, age 91, died on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at Indywood Glen Personal Care Home in Greenwood.
She was born on April 2, 1931 in Big Creek, MS, to the late George Parker and Lillian Aven Parker. She graduated from Big Creek High School in 1949 and moved to Greenwood where she first worked as a secretary for Fountain's Department Store. Sara met and married Norman S. Kenwright and quickly began a life of public service.
Mrs. Kenwright began working as a deputy clerk in the Circuit Clerk's office and later a deputy collector for the Leflore County Tax Assessor/Collector. She lost a bid for County Tax Assessor/Collector in 1983 and after four years at Whittington, Brock, Swayze and Dale as a legal secretary and bookkeeper, she successfully ran again, holding the position of Tax Assessor/Collector for 24 years. Sara will be remembered for her fairness, discretion, and kindness while performing her duties. In her spare time, she also volunteered at the food pantry and loved her flowers.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Norman S. Kenwright; two sisters, Mary Alice Burke and Carolyn Rhodes; infant brother, George Washington Parker Jr.; and a nephew, Ross Parker.
She is survived by her daughters, Kay Woods of Greenwood, MS, Sara Pannel of Belzoni, MS, and Leigh Ann Dugger of Greenville, SC; brothers, George Parker of Clinton, MS, and Sidney Parker of Big Creek, MS; sister, Sharon Brasher of Foley, AL; grandchildren, Jackie Pannel Jr, Paige Odom, Michael Stubbs, Greg Stubbs, Aven Brower, Evan Barrett, and Aubrey Anderson; seventeen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 16, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home. Rev. Mark Longino will officiate the services. Pallbearers will be Stephen Parker, Dale Parker, Michael Stubbs, Greg Stubbs, Joey Brower, and J.J. Pannel. Honorary Pallbearer will be Chuck Brasher.
The family would like to thank the many staff members of the Tax Collector office through the years who helped make Sara's tenure successful.
