Obituary

Sarah Patrick Abide, 89, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2017 at her home in Greenwood, MS.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Greenwood, with Father Patrick Noonan officiating.  A visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 9:30 at the church.

Known to her friends as "Pat", she was born July 12, 1927 in Hazelhurst, MS.  She was a graduate of Hazelhurst High School and Copiah Linclon Junior College.  In 1951, she was employed as a flight attendant with American Airlines and was based in Chicago, Memphis, and Dallas.  During her years with American, she discovered a love of travel and also met her future husband, who was in the Navy at the time.

In 1954 she married A.G. Abide, Jr. and together they owned and managed Abide's Ladies Apparel in Greenwood for 40 years.  Pat was involved in many church and civic activities.  She was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Madonna Prayer Group.  She was a lifetime member of the Greenwood Junior Auxiliary and a past member of Lebonte Club, Town and Country Garden Club and an emeritus member of Altrusa International.  She was an active member of Four Seasons Garden Club, an active volunteer for Cottonlandia museum for 14 years and also served on the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

She was predeceased by her parents and also a brother who died in infancy, her husband Albert George Abide, Jr., her son, Albert George Abide, III of Greenwood; her sister Billie Patrick Luttrell of Jackson and her great granddaughter Edith Pierce Williams of Los Angeles, CA.  She is survived by her daughter, Karen Abide Williams and husband Alan, of Columbus; three grandchildren, Sarah-Thorne Williams Davis and husband Ryan of Birmingham, AL, Patrick Albert Williams and wife Anna of Los Angeles, CA, Kathleen Williams Barnes and husband Christian of Orange, CA, and four great grandchildren, Harper and Wilson Davis of Birmingham and Rowan and Pierce Williams of Los Angeles, CA.  She is also survived by her sisters, Dorothy Patrick Crow of Brandon, and Patricia Patrick Friedman of Lebanon, TN, as well as her many nieces and nephews whom she truly adored and their love was returned to her immensely.

Pat will be remembered as a kind and compassionate friend to many.  She spread the love of friendship everywhere she went and leaves behind a host of loving friends.  All who were blessed to have called her friend may rest in the knowledge that this day she rejoices with the ones who have gone before her, awaits those of us who must wait to see her again and basks in the peace that comes with the presence of the Lord.

Burial will follow the service at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Greenwood. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Alex Malouf, Bill Malouf, Phil Ellis, Chip Ford, George Malouf, Chip Crow, Buster Norris, and John Malouf.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Michael Boler, Dr. Wally Moses, Barry Barth, Ralph Neely, David Hicks, Frank Jarman and George Jarman.

The family would like to express it sincerest gratitude to Dr. Michael Boler, Dr. Wally Moses, Sunflower Health, Grace Hospice and to her beloved caregivers Lilly Swims and Lou Ella Donley for their loving care and kindness they provided during her illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary to help maintain the chimes that were given to the church in memory of Mrs. Abide's son in 1983.  IHM Carillon Chimes, Post Office Box 313, Greenwood, MS 38935 or to the charity of your choice.
