Obituary

Sarah Jeanette “Jannie” Fondren Jones Tindall passed away at her home on October 1st after a hard-fought battle with mesothelioma at the age of 90.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 5, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood. Visitation will be at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home on Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 5 – 7 p.m. Mark Shiers and Mike Schmitz will officiate. Burial will follow in Blythe Creek Cemetery located at Blythe Creek Baptist Church in Mathiston, MS, at 3 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Bill Daves, Michael Hony, Frank Powell, Jordan Burchfield, Jason Hatcher and Jeff Fondren. Honorary pallbearers will be her great grandsons, Noah Powell and Micah Powell.

Jannie was born in Reform, MS. She graduated from Ackerman High School in 1955, and she moved to Greenwood in 1956. She worked at Hickok, formerly Supreme Electronics, for 58 years, where she made many lifelong friends before retiring in 2014. Jannie was a member of the West President Church of Christ.

Jannie was married to Russell R. Jones until his death in 1975. In 1979, she married Billy Tindall, and they remained married until his death in 2016.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Abb and Bessie Mae Fondren; her sister, Christine Ussey; her brothers, Joe Fondren and Lyndon Fondren; and her husbands, Russell R. Jones and Billy Tindall.

She is survived by two children, Danny R. Jones and Cindy Floyd (Harold); two granddaughters, Tiffani Floyd Powell (Frank) of Birmingham, AL, and Hayley Floyd Burchfield (Jordan) of Cleveland, MS; and three great-grandchildren, Noah Powell, Micah Powell, and Jannie Rose Powell, who was blessed to carry her name.

Jannie also leaves behind some very special friends, Michael and Candy Hony, whom she loved and referred to as her “other kids,” and her dear friend, Gloria Shiers. Known to everyone as her “camping buddies” they were the truest of friends always watching out for her and making sure she could continue doing one of the things she loved most - camping - throughout her illness. At times it was challenging, but they never complained and never stopped making sure she could enjoy the life she loved.

In the midst of her battle with cancer, Jannie also gained a new family who became incredibly special to both her and those who loved her. John & Christie Moyer quickly became known to her as “her doctors” after coming to her rescue so many times during her illness. Brittany Farmer, her home health nurse at Accent Care for over two years, always went above and beyond in caring for her. She was also blessed with the very best sitters, Ora King and Glenda Branch, who loved and cared for her as if she was their family too.

Ora drove Jannie anywhere and everywhere she wanted to go during the last 1 1/2 years of her life, and they affectionately became known as the “Driving Miss Daisy” duo. What began as caregiving grew into a beautiful friendship and bond that was inspiring to everyone who witnessed it.

Camping may have been Jannie’s favorite hobby, but her greatest love was always her family. She especially adored her two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. They were her pride and joy, and in her eyes, they could do no wrong.

Jannie loved life. She had a unique ability to make the best of whatever came her way and somehow found a reason to smile through it all. She was always ready for the next adventure. If asked whether she wanted to go somewhere, her response was usually not, “Where are we going?” but “When are we leaving?”

That spirit carried her through even the most difficult years of her life. Perseverance, determination and joy defined Jannie. Cancer took a lot from her, but it never took away the part of her that loved her family, treasured her friendships, welcomed the next adventure, and chose to keep going. She carried that spirit with her until the very end.
