Obituary

Scott Peter O'Neil, 59, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, June 15th, 2025 at Alive Hospice after a long battle with cancer.

Scott was born on February 3rd, 1966 to Peter Alexander O'Neil and Robin Joan Lucas O'Neil in Long Island, New York.  He spent the majority of his childhood in Lebanon, Tennessee, grew up in Immanuel Baptist Church, and went to Lebanon High School, where as a teenager Scott developed a keen interest in collecting.  This led to one of his greatest abilities; researching the history and value of something, buying it at a low price, and selling it to someone else for a profit.  He could recall the most minute details of some item in a specific genre of antiques or collectables, and use that power to drive the seller's price down, or increase the value of it in the eyes of the purchaser.  He truly had a gift and was a consummate salesman.

His first foray into the business side of collecting came at the Nashville Flea Market, where Scott soon had a booth, created a network of lifelong friends and trading partners, and honed his bartering skills and love for conversing with the public.  Professionally this led to him entering the pawn shop business, eventually owning Friedman's Loans, and expanding his knowledge of jewelry, finance, antiquities, and people. Additionally, Scott was the proprietor and / or partner in several other ventures, including a flower shop, a few nightclubs, and an antique store.  Illness forced his early retirement, but Scott continued to foster his love of collecting and the friendships he made throughout his life.  He will be missed by many, especially his family.

Scott was preceded in death by his father, Peter Alexander O'Neil.  He is survived by his mother, Robin Lucas O'Neil of Nashville; brother, David Robert O'Neil (Joanne) of Brentwood, and their children, Jonathan, Jinelle, Gabriella, Michael, and Jayden; brother, Craig Whitney O'Neil (Kim) of Franklin, and their children, Caroline (Simon), Kate, and Colin; and dear friends, Terry Martin and Matthew Miller.

A memorial service and visitation celebrating Scott's life will be held on Tuesday, July 8th, 2025 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the historic Cool Springs House, 1490 Volunteer Parkway Brentwood, Tennessee 37027.
