Dr Shelley H. Pillips' Obituary
Dr. Shelley Huddleston Phillips, 88, of Greenwood, died Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at Indywood Glen Personal Care. A memorial service will be Saturday, October 17, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Dr. Billy Ray Stonestreet will officiate at the service. Wilson & Knight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Phillips was born November 12, 1926, in Lauderdale, MS, to Shelley H. Phillips and Gladys Gilmore Phillips. He graduated from Macon High School in Noxubee County, MS, in 1944, and he served in the US Army for 2 years, spending most of his time in Germany. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Ann Claire Thomas, he attended and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1949. He continued his education at Emory University School of Dentistry in Atlanta, GA, and the University of Montreal Graduate School of Orthodontics in Canada. Dr. Phillips moved to Greenwood in 1955 and opened an orthodontic office where he practiced until he retired in 1991. He was an active member of St. John's United Methodist Church and served his community in many leadership roles. He was President of the Chamber of Commerce in 1970 and was awarded the Outstanding Citizen of Leflore County in 1968. He was an avid gardener, hunter, and reader,
and enjoyed all sports and the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a brother, John Melvin "Bubba" Phillips.
Dr. Phillips is survived by two daughters, Debbie Gipson of Vicksburg, Teri White and husband Rob of Greenwood, and his son Gary Phillips of Hattiesburg. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Kirk Gipson and wife MarLa of Ashville, NC, Eden Gipson Stanton and husband Drew of Montgomery, AL, Ashley White Murray and husband Glenn of Memphis, TN, and Spencer White of Memphis, TN. His two great-grandchildren are Charlotte and Bethany Stanton of Montgomery, AL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church.
