Solon Alexander Scott Jr., businessman and entrepreneur, age 88, passed away February 1, 2026, at his home in Greenwood, Mississippi. A private family graveside service will be held on February 9, 2026, in the Itta Bena Cemetery with Father Don Chancellor officiating. Wilson and Knight Funeral Home is in charge of services.

Solon was born February 20, 1937 in Itta Bena, Mississippi. He attended Mississippi State University, Mississippi Delta Community College, and Delta State before returning home to help his mother run their family business, Scott Butane Gas Systems, after his father's sudden death in 1957.

He served as President of Scott Petroleum Corporation for over 60 years. Under his leadership, Scott grew from 2 propane trucks and 5 employees, to being a leader in the petroleum industry. In the early 70's, the name was changed to Scott Petroleum, and they expanded into other petroleum related markets selling gasoline and diesel fuel to farming operations and convenience stores. While serving as President of Scott Petroleum Corp., Mr. Scott invested in other business ventures. In 1967, Solon, his brother, Steve Scott, and lifelong friend, Derwood Strain, began a farming operation, Triple S Farms. When Triple S Farms split, Solon began raising catfish. Three years later, he built America's Catch catfish processing plant. He continued to own this business with his two children, Solon Scott III and Liz Barrett. His son, Solon Scott III, was the President of America's Catch until his death last year.

In the 70's, he was also involved with building a salt dome underground storage for propane gas in Petal, MS, and owned a natural gas liquid trading business in Texas. He built one of the largest fertilizer distribution centers in Greenville, MS, with facilities for liquid and dry fertilizer. He sold this business to Gold Kist Cooperative. In 2006, Scott built a bio-diesel plant in Greenville, MS, so that his company could provide alternative fuel in the form of green energy to his customers.

In an ever-changing industry, Mr. Scott continued to excel as a leader and constantly looked for ways to improve his business and community. His impact made a tremendous mark on the communities that he served and the employees that helped him achieve his many goals.

Solon was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity. He previously served as the Chairman of the annual fundraising event for the Leflore County Boy Scouts and has served as the Itta Bena Morgan City Rotary Club President. He was a stockholder in Delta Western Feed Mill. He was a past member of the Pillow Academy Endowment Board and in 2016 created the Scott Family Tuition Assistance Endowment to help Pillow Academy students. In 2017, he was recognized by the Delta Council for his outstanding contributions to Delta Agriculture and was awarded the Distinguished Citizen's Award. Solon was also long- time supporter of the Leflore County Humane Society and loved his cats. He was a robust fellow and was truly one of a kind. He enjoyed skeet shooting and long visits with good friends. He loved to tell jokes and had an infectious laugh. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Stephens Scott and Solon Alexander Scott Sr., his brother, Steve Scott Sr., and his beloved son and business partner, Solon A. Scott III.

He is survived by his wife, Teresita; daughter, Liz Barrett (Noel) of Greenwood; daughter-in-law, Ashley Scott of Greenwood; three step-children, Dr. Hannah Gwin of Gulfport, Helen Gwin O'dell (Peyton) of Greenwood, and Hugh Atkinson (Kathleen) of Greenwood; ten grandchildren, Solon A. Scott IV and Ava Scott of Greenwood, Noelle Barrett Linebach (Sean) of Nashville, TN, Scott Barrett of Franklin, TN, Isabella and Alexandra O'dell of Greenwood, Gage and Olivia Atkinson of Grenada, and Landon Atkinson and Maggie Atkinson of Greenwood; and two great-grandchildren, Eliza and Grant Linebach of Nashville, TN.

Pallbearers will be Scott Barrett, Solon Scott IV, Dink Strain, Steve Scott Jr., Hugh Atkinson, Peyton O'dell and Andrew Stainback.

Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Freeman, Rickie Robertson, Bill Brown, John Conner Jr, Bill Litton, Wayne Bush, Johnny Henson, Ray Makamson, Fred Jones (Led) Poindexter, and Jim Tackett.
