Obituary

Wardell Samuel Pittman, 86, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Kosciusko, Mississippi. He was born November 23, 1930 to Stanley Pittman and Irene Brannon Pittman in Eupora, Mississippi. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1947 to 1953. He was wounded in action on September 2, 1950 at Masan, Korea.  For his bravery, he was awarded a Purple Heart, the symbol of courage and dedication.

Mr. Pittman moved to West Point, Mississippi, in 1954, and served as a respected Law Enforcement Officer for approximately 4 years before moving to Greenwood, Mississippi.  He began a career with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks as a Game Warden before earning the title of Assistant Chief. He retired on March 1, 1993 where he then actively served as a court bailiff and also enjoyed hobbies such as hunting, fishing, gardening, crossword puzzles and playing dominoes with friends.

His faith and family were the two most important things in his life. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood, MS.

Mr. Pittman was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his devoted loving wife, Sarah Eunice (Cox) Pittman and one son, Michael Phillip Pittman (Kay) of Tupelo, MS, a step-son, Joseph Pardon of Atlanta, GA, one grandson, Michael Phillip Pittman, II of Portland, OR, one granddaughter, Shannon Atkins of Tupelo, MS, and two great-grandchildren, Evan Atkins and Hannah Atkins of Tupelo, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and three sisters.

The family would like to thank the administrator, the medical staff, and the nurses at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Kosciusko, Mississippi, for the loving care and kindness given to Mr. Pittman over the last four months.

Visitation and a Celebration of Life service will be held at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood, MS, on Wednesday, August 9, 2017. Visitation will be 9:00 am until time of the service at 11:00 am. A private family burial will be at the North Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
