William Thomas "Billy" Burrus, Sr. 82 of Greenwood died Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2015 at Itta Bena Cemetery. Dr. Rusty Douglas and Rev. Steve Fortenberry will officiate.
Mr. Burrus was born March 9, 1933 in Baird, MS to William McKinley and Laura Powell Burrus. He graduated from Sunflower Agricultural High School and earned his associates degree from Sunflower Junior College. Mr. Burrus was a member of North Greenwood Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years Geraldine Davis Burrus. He served four years in the United States Air Force, including brief war-time service at the conclusion of the Korean War and also spent four years in the US Air Force Reserve.
Mr. Burrus is survived by his son Bill Burrus and wife Karyn of Greenwood, MS, his brother Frank Burrus of Bay St. Louis, MS, his grandson Thomas Burrus of Greenwood, MS and a special friend Margie Carpenter of Greenwood, MS. Nieces, Tissie Brock, Lexington; Suzanne Williams, Minter City; Nancy Bennett, Indianola;, Kristi Smith, Indianola; Tami Martin, Long Beach, MS; Mona Harris, Memphis.
After the service there will be a visitation for family and friends at the home of Bill and Karyn Burrus.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Farmer, Reese Pillow, Austin Wilkey, John Stewart, Jim Quinn, Chris Cascio, Mark Singleton, and Michael McCool. The family offers a special thanks to the care Mr. Burrus received from Dr. Wally Moses, the nursing staff on the fourth floor of Greenwood-Leflore Hospital, especially Lawanda Glass, and to April Moss and Kelly Clark and the staff of Riverview Nursing Home.
